Ladies, Let’s Talk About Breast Cancer Prevention

Knowing your body, can save you life

According to the Susan G Komen foundation “Cancer is when cells don’t die at the normal rate, there’s more cell growth than cell death. This excess growth can form a tumor. Breast cancer occurs when cells in the breast divide and grow without their normal control.”

Lowering your risk of breast cancer is possible with the right practices. By being well-informed of your family history, taking care of your body, and getting regular checkups you can best lower your risk.

Know your history

The hard conversations are oftentimes the most important.

Knowing your family history might just save your life. It’s important to talk with family members about your family’s history of breast cancer. Having these conversations can also help you give accurate information to your healthcare provider.

Get regular screens

After talking to your healthcare provider, and deciding on a proper course of action, women over a certain age should get regular screening.

Those at average risk should ideally get a yearly mammogram starting at age 40.

In between screenings you should pay attention to any potential signs of breast cancer, finding it early may save your life.

Know your body

It’s essential to know your body and what is normal for your body. When you’re consistently doing self-exams you begin to notice little changes and symptoms that are important to share with your doctor. This is important so you’re able to properly discuss with your healthcare provider.

Make healthy choices

Making healthy choices is a key part of maintaining a healthy breast cancer-free lifestyle.  Ways of doing this are by maintaining a healthy weight, continuing to be physically active, and reducing hormone therapy.
